When moving to a new location, you always have to leave something behind – a familiar environment, close contact with family and friends, even your own sense of identity. These losses can be profound, leading to feelings of depression.

Many studies have shown that migrants have a higher risk of developing depression. For some, this makes it all the more difficult to integrate successfully into the new surroundings.

Martina Famos, a psychological counsellor in Zurich, explains the phenomenon and discusses what migrants can do to manage it.
